Description
The greater area of Marathon is famous mainly for both the historical battle between Greeks and Persians and the annual event of the Marathon running race. Near the Battle of Marathon’s historical point, the cremated remains of the soldiers who lost their life in the battlefield, are buried. This Tomb is the starting point of the Classical Marathon route. Apart from the rich archaeological history,the area of Marathon holds a very significant rank within Attica’s natural landscapes. The 12 km long sandy beach, the unique pine forest and the dam, which has shaped the spectacular artificial Marathon Lake, are among the finest highlights every visitor should explore.
