Paleochora

Description

Description

Palaiochora is a medieval settlement which was the island’s capital for almost a thousand years (800 – 1800 AD). Situated in a remote hilly area, it was positioned there to provide shelter from the frequent pirate invasions of the time. The various buildings were purposely built with local materials in a certain way so as to blend with the landscape, offering a natural camouflage as a measure of protection.

The settlement is well preserved today, an unusual and fascinating place to visit, bringing the visitor to another era. The numerous little churches, narrow stone roads, and general architecture have resulted in Paleochora being called the ‘Mystras of the islands’ in reminiscence of the famous medieval settlement of the Peloponnese.
